Lot No. 1161

A Pair of Figural Candleholders, Meissen c. 1745–50

porcelain, polychromed and gilt, wired for single light, the chandelier shaft, formed from rocaille and reeds, rises from a base with Dulong relief, held by a woman in a chiton and cloak and a boy in a cloak, surmounted by candle sconces, moulded décor, height 31.5 and 31.2 cm, model by Johann Joachim Kaendler and workshop, underglaze blue crossed swords mark, former no. “7” and blue painter mark, the stand restored, decor and gilding minimally scuffed, (GO)

These figural candlesticks with a female main figure and smaller attendant figures were preceded by the designs for the Sulkowski Service from 1736 and the table candleholders for the Swan Service between 1738 and 1739. The candlestick model cannot be assigned to any of Johann Joachim Kaendler's work journals or to any of his workshop employees. The iconographic interpretation of these female figures in this pair of figural candlesticks as a muse or Polyhymnia is suggested by the comparison with the series of 9 muses for King Frederick II 1744-45 by Eberlein. The use of "German flowers" suggests that this pair of candlesticks was made and decorated in around 1745-1750. Both candlesticks display an identical model, and are decorated in relation to each other. The respective hair colours and the decor and base colour of the respective clothing are reversed.
