Emilie Schleiss-Simandl, Tiled Stove,
Schleiss, Gmunden c. 1920/26, ceramic, white glazed, standing on four feet, the lower part widened upwards, gadrooned, conical top with three tiers, the tiles decorated with flowers in relief, figural finial, total height 225 cm, cornice width 108 cm, cornice depth 90 cm, base width 77 cm, base depth 60 cm, feet height 27 cm, the stove was never assembled, without stove door, for both wood firing and electric heating, one tile broken, restored, 2 feet have been recently supplemented, minor restorations to glaze damage, (Hr)
As the stove was never used, it can be assumed that this is probably a sample piece. The figural finial is a design from around 1913-20 (see Gollner, Gmundner Keramik). From 1926, Schleiss no longer produced stoves and sold the models, which were manufactured in Gmunden and Munich. An almost identical stove, designed by Emilie Schleiss, can be found in the catalogue of the Keramische Werkstätte Hans Schuppmann in Munich. The lower part of the stove illustrated here is slightly different in shape.
Lit.:
Irmgard Gollner, Gmundner Keramik, Gmunden 2003, p. 59, ill. 70, 70a.
