Note:
In the 1970s, while searching for interesting historical details about the city of Cologne, Daniel Spoerri found an old book about supposed religious figures of an ancient Slavic tribe – the so-called ‘Obotriten’. The illustrations in that book intrigued him because they appeared to be reminiscent of works of art brut. Much later, it emerged that Spoerri had been correct. The somewhat awkward figures turned out to be fake, created by individuals who claimed to have discovered them under a tree in their orchard in Prillwitz. Nevertheless, they inspired the artist, and he created a new series of huge bronze sculptures that he called ‘Prillwitz idols’. There are approximately 30 large bronze figures and several smaller ones, known as the ‘Prillwitzchen’. Each of these bronze sculptures is produced in an edition of 8 ( + 4 ea). They are considered ‘originals in series’ since they are not identical. The artist creates each figure with new elements and slight changes, using cast pieces that are usually discarded.
