Burma (Myanmar): a standing Buddha figurine, gilded with gold leaf. Style: Mandalay. - Tribal Art

A Buddha figurine standing on a round lotus base. Carved from a single piece of hard wood, with hands then inserted. Primed with red lacquer and entirely gilded with gold leaf. In a simple monk’s habit, with decorated edging. The decoration consists of bands of volutes created using the thayo technique (lacquer and ash are rolled together to form thin fibres, then cut and applied) and bands and rosettes made of white and green mirrored plaques. Two bands of these mirrored plaques go across the forehead, with a central rosette made of red plates. The hairstyle consists of tightly packed rows of dots, topped with a clear central ‘ushnisha’ (wisdom bump). The eyes consist of white ceramic with painted black pupils.
Some scuffing of the gilding due to age and minor cracks to the right hand. Otherwise no damage. Style: Mandalay.
Height: 76 cm; width: 35 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.
