Pende, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a beautiful, old pendant made of ivory, called ‘Ikhoko’. Around 1900. - Tribal Art

A very beautiful amulet pendant made of old ivory, called ‘Ikhoko’. From the West Pende in southwestern Congo. In the form of a ‘Mbuya mask’ in typical Pende style: with wide forehead, continuous eyebrows, drooping eyelids, with small nose slightly curved upwards, and open mouth with rows of teeth, above the pointed chin. The hairstyle displays three points (or a ‘crown’) – a sign that this represents a chief. With transverse drilling at the top, to suspend it. It was worn as a protective amulet by initiated men. The ivory of this ‘Ikhoko’ displays a fine, old craquelure and honey-coloured flecks at the front. At the rear, the piece ranges from dark to brown-black (ivory becomes dark in patches).
Height: 6 cm; width: 3.6 cm.
About 1900 or earlier. (ME) ASA

Provenance:
