Lotto No. 360

Jacopo Fabris

Jacopo Fabris - Dipinti antichi

(Venice 1689–1761 Charlottenborg)
The Piazzetta looking towards San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice,
oil on canvas, 95.5 x 128 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private European Collection

We are grateful to Dario Succi for suggesting the attribution.

On the right of the present composition, a flank of the basilica surmounted by a flagpole is represented in shade, while opposite, on the left, we see the Loggetta by Jacopo Sansovino, the Campanile and the Library. In the central area the two columns surmounted by Saint Theodore and the Lion of Saint Mark are silhouetted against the blue sky, framing a splendid vision of the Bacino di San Marco and the Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore.

According to Succi, the attribution of this view painting is confirmed by the distinctive stylistic and technical characteristics of the artist: the careful, but not explicit, description of the architectural fabric orchestrating the fall of well-defined shade, the sky crossed by pink and grey clouds of notably decorative effect, and the figures, revealing striking similarities to those of Johann Richter because of the bright colours of their dress, and the crowding of individuals that populate the Piazzetta.

Dario Succi dates the present work to around 1745-1750.
