The amusement fair was one of Gaspard’s favourite themes. Most of his ‘fair’ pictures (‘Fair’, ‘End of the fair’, ‘Return from the fair’) were completed between 1911–1915, during Gaspard’s stay in France (around 1900–1916), which was interrupted only once by his honeymoon to Russia. Gaspard’s early style is expressed through the small, short brush strokes with which the artist renders diverse details. Gaspard only signed his paintings in the years 1911–1912, and repeatedly changed the spelling of his name, which reads here: Léon Schulman Gaspard.
