The “Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule” says of Ludwig Munthe, “Together with H. F. Gude, he took up a leading position amongst the Norwegian landscape painters in Düsseldorf. In his repertoire of motifs, autumn and winter scenes dominated, frequently evening atmospheres with the setting sun (…) Munthe’s ability to render melting snow was particularly vaunted. His palette is subdued, the grey-brown colouring well-suited to the melancholic atmosphere of his landscapes…”
