Raffaele Carelli

Raffaele Carelli - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Monopuli 1795–1864 Naples)
A view of Liri island with Valcatoio waterfall and washerwomen in the foreground, signed, dated Carelli 1836,
oil on canvas, 58 x 72.5 cm, framed, (W)

Raffaelle Carelli was the fifth son of the painter Gabriele Settimo Carelli. Although he started to study medicine, he soon chose to follow in the footsteps of his father, who gave him his first lessons. In 1809 he entered W. Huber’s atelier in Naples, where he was confronted with the school of Posilippo, befriending Pitloo (1790–1837) and Gigante (1806–1876). Classical in his portraits and genres scenes, Carelli soon became famous for his romantic landscape paintings, which helped secure him an honorary teaching position at the Accademia delle belle Arti in Naples. In 1885 he exhibited a selection of works in the Real Museo Borbonico, where he was awarded a gold medal.
The present landscape shows the Cascata Grande on the Isola del Liri in the Province of Frosinone, Italy, which, at the time the work was painted, was famous for its paper Industry.
