Cuenca fragment, - Tappeti orientali, tessuti, arazzi

Spain, c. 175 x 103 cm, 17th century, the first European carpets were knotted in Spain and date back to the 12th century and were initially known as so-called coat-of-arms’ carpets, other carpets were later also copied, such as the pomegranate, Holbein and - in the 17th century - Lotto carpets, the present piece from the above-mentioned series is preserved as a fragment, its field pattern consists of dotted eyes, grids and birds, a very similar carpet was published in “Teppiche, Tradition und Kunst in Orient und Okzident” (p. 329), manufactured in symmetrical knots with original ends on both sides, the carpet is trimmed on its long sides with mounted borders, several repairs, entirely mounted on linen.
