A “Transition Seat”, Kosmos Project (Ewa Bochen & Maciej Jelski), - Design

Poland, 2014, plywood, oak, powder-coated tubular steel, height 105 cm, width 60 cm, depth 65 cm, height of seat 39 cm. (DRAX)
vFirst prototype. With a certificate.

The plywood seat is supported on a powder-coated metal construction. The seat is painted in “holy green”, whereas the backrest shows the natural oak veneer. The metal construction in galactic purple is meant to create a visual contrast between the natural colours and the artificial one. The backrest imitates the shape of the shield of an ancient warrior. The object unites traditional craftsmanship and contemporary digital technologies.

Kosmos Project is a design studio set up by Ewa Bochen and Maciej Jelski. In philosophy, the cosmos is an orderly and harmonious system and the opposite of chaos, which gave the group its name. Kosmos Project’s inspiration derives from the observation of the relationship between the civilised world and wild nature. The designers believe that these two separate worlds can coexist in harmony. Their design approach is built on the conviction that our environment determines our attitudes, which has a direct bearing on the objects they design. Things that surround us have a great impact on our behaviour and relationships. This does not only concern the physical part of our existence, but also, and maybe primarily, our emotional and spiritual life. The designers strongly believe that modern design needs to focus on human spirituality as a way to break with today’s dehumanized life. Each project is meticulously thought through, with great care and attention to concept, material, proportions.
