Mbole, Dem. Rep. of Congo: An old side-blown trumpet made of ivory with a black leather cuff below.
A side-blown trumpet made from ivory, from the Mbole in central Congo. It has an oval blow hole on the inside of a rhombus-shaped bulge in the upper third of the wind instrument. The ivory shows its considerable age and has darkened over time (see the profile of the thin, uppermost point). The additional, red colouring is likely to have been caused by brushing with palm oil. Moreover the trumpet shows a smooth, shiny patina from protracted use. The black-dyed leather cuff on the lower end of the instrument has been sewn on one side and is also visibly very old. In the area of the cuff some pieces have broken off the ivory. Otherwise no damage. Length: 44 cm. About 1900 to the first third of the 20th century. (ME) ASA
