Frans Francken II and Workshop

Frans Francken II and Workshop - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1581–1642)
Solomon’s Idolatry(1, Kings 11),
oil on panel, 64 x 49.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Dorotheum Wien, 11 December 2008, lot 42;
Private collection, Germany

In the Book of Kings, we learn that Solomon practiced polygymy and allegedly had 700 wives and 300 concubines. His consorts talked Solomon into worshipping their false idols and make offerings to them. God punished the disobedient king for the sacrilege by dividing his empire, which resulted in several wars. The artist’s catalogue raisonné (U. Härting, Frans Francken der Jüngere, Freren, 1989) lists several versions on this subject. The present painting is most closely related to a composition on copper, which was once in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Liège, but is now lost.
