Lotto No. 158

Workshop of Hans Rottenhammer

Workshop of Hans Rottenhammer - Dipinti antichi

(Munich 1564–1625 Augsburg)
The Raising of Lazarus,
oil on copper, 27.5 x 36.5 cm, framed

Inscribed on the reverse: Hans Rottenhammer/pinxit.

Provenance:
Collection of Privy Councillor Carl Gottlob Freiherr v. Gaertner (1777–1859), Berlin, 1826 (according to a label on the reverse);
Private collection, Belgium

The composition of the present painting has previously only been known in the form of two drawings owned by the Albertina in Vienna and the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York (see Hans Rottenhammer, begehrt - vergessen - neu entdeckt, exhibition catalogue, Lemgo/Prague 2008/9, pp. 114–116). The painting precisely follows the Vienna preliminary drawing, which differs from the New York sheet in several details. The choice of subject matter and the late Mannerist stylistic features portrayed in the painting, reflect Rottenhammer’s pre-occupation with contemporary Italian art in general and especially with the art of his role models, Taddeo Zuccari and Cavalier d’Arpino.
