Lotto No. 80

Yaka (or Bayaka), Dem. Rep. of Congo: A large pipe (musical instrument) with a female half figure, who supports a bird on her head.

Yaka (or Bayaka), Dem. Rep. of Congo: A large pipe (musical instrument) with a female half figure, who supports a bird on her head. - Tribal Art

A wind instrument of the Yaka, who live in southwestern Congo. Carved in hard, brown wood. The lower end of the relatively large pipe is in the form of a female half figure (shown here with the figure at the top and the mouthpiece at the bottom). The figure has a typical, very carefully carved Yaka head, with protruding, half-rounded ears, a stepped border of the face (which appears frequently with the Yaka), and a protruding mouth with exceptionally finely carved, pointed rows of teeth. On her head the woman carries the figure of a bird. The head of the bird is missing (old break). Carved from a single piece. Around her neck the woman wears a multi-strand necklace of small, coloured glass beads. Overall this Yaka pipe is a beautiful, interesting object with good, old and shiny patina as a result of protracted use. Small age damage (a crack in the head on the back right). H: 45.3 cm. First half of the 20th century (ME)

Provenance: French Private Collection.

Lit.: 'Yaka' by Arthur P. Bourgeois, fig. 6.
