Provenance: collector’s mark Collection Cesare Frigerio (1890-1977?), Milan on the recto (Lugt 4363); collection Dr. Giorgio Dalla Bella (geb. 1923), Milan (Lugt 3774); private collection, Italy.

With a certificate by Dr. Nicholas Turner, Halstead, 18th March 2014, by Prof. Ugo Ruggeri (both in copies), and a hand written confirmation by Prof. Andrea Emiliani (2012), who will list the draeing in his upcoming publication on Barocci.

The present drawing is a hitherto non published draft by Federico Barocci for the resurrected Christ in the painting Christ and Maria Magdalene ("Noli me tangere"). Three versions of the painting exist: the earliest was commissioned by Giuliano della Rovere in 1590 and is preserved in the Alten Pinakothek, Munich (Inv. Nr. 494, Fig. 1). Other autographic versions are in the Uffizzi and a later one is in the Allendale Collection, Bywell Hall, Northumberland (Emiliani 1985, Vol. II, p. 243). More than 30 preliminary drawings and studies are known for the three versions of the subject. The paining in the Allendale Collection was engraved by Luca Ciamberlano in 1609. In regard of the pose of Christ a study in the Albertina (Inv. Nr. 25631, Emiliani 2008, p. 81, No. 41/C9) and one in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Emiliani 1985, Fig. 507) resemble the figure on the present sheet most.
