Lotto No. 126

Silk cloak,

Silk cloak, - Tappeti orientali, tessuti, arazzi

probably England (Europe), c. 137 x 286 cm, about 1600, a violet silk all-over repeat with so-called “frog feet” pattern (also known from Asia) on six-panel silk ground, the pattern is executed in so-called “velours ciselé” technique, in which the pile warps are partly cut, leaving the loop-like uncut pile lower; in order to intensify the silk glitter, rolled sheet silver was added to the foundation, which suggests that the present (coronation?) cloak may have been used by a high-ranking personality; some areas with heavy abrasion; mounted on red waxed linen on the reverse; the upper blue silk textile element is a later addition; formerly attached embroideries, such as shield and orphreys, are no longer present. (MA)

Lit.: Barbara Markowsky, Kunstgewerbemuseum der Stadt Köln, Europäische Seidengewebe des 13.-18. Jahrhunderts; Monique King and Donald King, The Keir Collection, European Textiles in the Keir Collection, 400 BC to 1800 AD; Philippa Scott, the Book of Silk.
