Mixed lot (2 items): Persia, India and South Africa: An old ‘Devil’s head battle mace’ made of iron, with etched décor, and a spherical head club with projection, made of hard wood.
1: An iron 'Devil’s head-club’, once used in Persia and also in India by the warrior caste, as ceremonial weapon. Head and shaft are engraved and etched with leafy and floral tendrils, and screwed together. The lower end of the shaft shows old rust damage. 19th century; L: 70 cm.
2: A beautiful spherical club, called ‘knobkerrie’. From the Zulu or related tribes, such as the Xhosa, Nguni and others, in South Africa. Carved from hard, dark brown wood in a single piece. The charming small projection in the shape of a double cone on top of the spherical head is also carved out from the same piece of wood. The round shaft terminates in a slightly thickened pommel. Minor flaking and tears as a result of protracted use.
