Luba-Hemba, Dem. Rep. of Congo: An old chief’s stool with a standing female caryatid figure. - Arte Tribale

A ‘Kihona’ chief’s stool of the Luba-Hemba, in southeastern Congo. Carved from hard brown wood and coloured black and brown. With a round stand and seat. Around or before 1900; H: 36 cm. (ME)

Provenance: From the old family collection Van Innis, Belgium; Belgian Collection.

Lit.: 'Afrikanische Sitze' by Sandro Bocola, fig. 132, 133; '100 Peoples of Zaire and their Sculpture' by Marc L. Felix, fig. p. 35.
