Lotto No. 312 #

Circle of Anthonis van Dyck

Circle of Anthonis van Dyck - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1599–1641 London)
Portrait of a nobleman, in half-armour,
oil on canvas, 63,5 x 49,5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Collection Robert W. Lyons, Indiana (as Peeter Franchoys);
Art dealer Whitney, New York (with expert report William R. Valentiner of 1942, as Peeter Franchoys);
Art dealer Mondschein, New York (as Peeter Franchoys, attributed to,);
private collection, Switzerland

The present painting was for a long time considered to be a work by Peeter Franchoys. We are grateful to Hans Vlieghe, who suggested an attribution to Lucas Franchoys II. (Mecheln 1616–1681) who was more closely associated with van Dyck. Franchoys presumably worked with van Dyck on several of the latter’s late period works and was one of the most prominent proponents of the van Dyke school. He stayed true to van Dyck’s late style, in particular in his portraits.
