porcelain, cobalt blue lid, neck and base with gilt edging, 3 gilt stars and N flanked by laurel branches, baluster with slight craquelure, encompassed by the polychrome painted scene, signed Maxant, yellow-metal eagle finial, all parts with delicate moulded decoration, octagonal plinth, Height: 75 cm, the base with restorations, France, 2nd Half 19th Cent.(Ru)

Depicting the Battle of Wagram 1809, after a 1836 painting by Horace Vernet (1798-1863) at Versailles (Gallerie des Bastilles). In 1833, Louis Philipp I, the “citizen king” had decided to convert the Palace of Versailles into a historical museum with the Gallerie des Bastilles containing paintings depicting important moments in French military history. The Battle at Wagram took place on 5th and 6th July 1809 outside Vienna. The victory of the Napoleon’s Army spelled the end of the Fifth Coalition War.
