We are grateful to Johann Kronbichler for his kind assistance in cataloguing the present painting. He sees a connection to the painter Johann Baptist Enderle (1725–1798), who was active in Donauwörth in Swabia, and his circle. Saint Donatus of Münstereifel, a catacomb saint, was venerated throughout the German-speaking region as a patron saint against bad weather and thunderstorms.
