Budja, Democratic Republic of Congo: An abstract dance crest for fertility and hunting ceremonies.
A typical dance crest of the Budja, a small tribe in northern Congo. Made of wood, in characteristic, abstract form. On a cap made of braided rattan-stripes, with a hanging made of plant fibres attached. Used for dances for the promotion of the fertility of the fields and for luck when hunting. An old piece, with good, dark patina. A crack due to age (glued). First half of the 20th century; H: c. 51 cm. (ME)
