Lotto No. 93

Attributed to Jasper van der Laanen

(c. 1585 - after 1624)
Abraham and the Three Angels,
oil on canvas, 112.5 x 120.1 cm, unframed

Provenance:
Anonymous Sale, Sotheby’s, New York, 10 June 2011, lot 240 In 1607 Jasper van der Lanen entered the workshop of Nicolaas Geerts and eight years later in 1615 was able to become a master of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp. He got married to Elisabeth Rombouts in 1624 and a fellow artist, Abraham Govaerts, acted as a witness.

Most Flemish artists in Antwerp during this time specialised in a certain field. Just like Abraham Govaerts, van der Lanen concentrated on landscapes which he excelled in. As in the present composition, his landscapes were often the setting for religious subjects and the staffage was sometimes added by a figure painter such as Frans Francken II.
