Lotto No. 28

“Pittore dei Bonometti”, 17th Century

“Pittore dei Bonometti”, 17th Century - Dipinti antichi

Portrait of a lady,
oil on canvas, 105 x 86.5 cm, framed

The present portrait is related to a group of paintings of which one is conserved in the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, a Portrait Giovanni Antonio Bonometti of 1633. Mina Gregori has given the name ‘Pittore dei Bonometti’ to this group and the name derives from the afore-mentioned portrait and a portrait of his father, Giovanni Battista Bonometti (see F. Frangi and A. Morandotti, Il Ritratto in Lombardia, da Moroni a Ceruti, exhibition catalogue, Varese 2002, p. 196, no. 76, ill.).

It has been suggested that the artist may not necessarily be Italian, but a Dutch or Flemish painter active in Italy in the first half of the 17th century with knowledge of the work of Domenico Fetti and Bernardo Strozzi.

The present work displays sensibility towards light and the use of warm colors which are characteristic of this artist, and the present work constitutes an important addition to the corpus of works of this painter.
