Ireland (Europe), c. 438 x 353 cm, c. 1900, Turkish knots on cotton warp and yellow dyed cotton wefts, on both sides with folded weaving finish; forerunners of the Art and Craft movement in the early 20th century were the famous designers William Morris, C. F. A. Voysey, who designed hand-made carpets with a mixture of traditional stylistic elements, Art and Craft influences and Art Nouveau, well-known special brands are the Donegal, Wilton and Hammersmith carpets; the present carpet is a typical representative of that period with its oversized blossoms and many green parts, recently washed, partly with very low pile and some major bare areas at the upper end, edges and end damage, embroidered on the back with white yarn "Orendi".
