West China, c. 241 x 77 cm, probably mid-18th century, bench runner manufactured for a Tibetan monastery with four foo dogs on either side surrounding a peony flower, a medallion with ying yang symbols dominates the centre of the gallery, the lower end may have been replaced, as its different warp threads seem to suggest, soft, velvety pile wool in original depth.
