Indonesia, Kalimantan (Borneo), Dayak: A small mask with Dayak decoration.
A small mask made of lightweight, light-coloured wood, dyed brown and black on the front. Decorated with typical Dayak curved volutes carved in relief. Probably depicts an ape. From southern Borneo (tribe cannot be more specifically determined). The form follows strong influence from Java (Wayang-Topeng masks). With patina and minor age damage (some pieces broken off on the back rim, a hole in the right cheek of the mask). First half to mid-20th century; H: 21 cm. (ME)
