Ogoni, Nigeria: A typical, small mask with hinged jaw.
A finely manufactured mask of the Ogoni, who live in the hinterland of the Niger delta in southeastern Nigeria. The present, typical small and impressively old Ogoni mask with hinged jaw is made of light wood. The face was originally white coloured. The hat, the typical tribal scarification marks, the nose, the slit eyes, the ears as well as the large lips are dyed black. The lower jaw with pointed chin is connected to the upper jaw by means of leather bands (probably secondary). ‘Teeth’ made of wooden pegs are inserted in the hinged lower jaw (some missing). An unusually old piece of this type, with good patina and minor age damage (colour scuffed in the front, some pieces broken off).First half of the 20th century; H: 18 cm. (ME)
