Pieter Mulier

Pieter Mulier - Dipinti antichi

(Haarlem 1615–1659)
Fishing vessels in a stormy sea,
oil on panel, 50.3 x 72.8 cm, framed

We are grateful to Laurens Schoemaker, RKD, for confirming the authenticity of the present painting, which is registered at the RKD as an autograph work under no. 280333.

Mulier’s work can be described as that of a typical marine painter. His works mostly show estuaries in rainy weather, stormy seascapes, and coastal views. He was among the few marine painters that would use a portrait format for maritime tempests under high, cloudy skies. A follower of Jan Porcellis and Simon de Vlieger, Mulier is assigned to the so-called “Grey School” of tonal realism. His painting style is characterised by a fluent brushwork and visible brush marks. The special atmosphere of his compositions derives from the interplay between sunlight and clouds and their reflections on the water.
