probably from the Northern India state of Uttar Pradesh, lovely, rare and very old stone sculpture with large eyes and gaze sunk in meditation; with eyebrows, which would have originally been carved in delicate relief, long, flat nose, small mouth, full lips and typically long ears, to top of the head the 'ushnisha' (topknot of wisdom or ‘mound of wisdom’) can be clearly seen, with its spiral curls of hair, the left eyebrow, nose and mouth are chipped with surrounding age-related traces of weathering evident, nonetheless, the Buddha’s head is a perfect piece in terms of its proportions and style, height 25 cm, width approx. 16.5 cm (the stone head on its own), height with base 34 cm. (ME)
