We are grateful to Mathias Ary-Jan, David Pluskwa and Gérard Fabre of the Association Félix Ziem for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original.

Felix Ziem produced a substantial body of work as a painter, especially views of Venice, but the subject of the present work is unusual. There is indeed only one other version published in Pierre Miquel’s book, but slightly smaller. There are some differences between the two works largely confined to the figures in the foreground. The present work shows a bustling street in Venice with the Punta della Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute in the distance.
