Very fine Sepik Lime container with spatula, Sepik region Papua New Guinea around 1900.
Wood, 37 cm. The bird shaped spatula represents the link between the living and their ancestors. These containers are made from oblong gourds, used to hold the lime. The finely incised patterns around and near the opening all heightened with lime. Gourd, cassowary bone.
