Eroded Dayak fragment depicting an 'Aso', Borneo, 19th to early 20th century.
35 x 41 cm. Fine mask-like carving of an 'Aso', a mythological dragonlike creature commonly represented in the art of Borneo. Typically, the tendril like arms extend from the sculpture, the mouth is a grimace and the eyes are large and bulging. The eyes of this sculpture are crudely hewn and the pegs surrounding the pupils suggest that Chinese porcelain rice bowls were once attached to give this carving even more presence.
