Lotto No. 115

Saruk Ferahan,

Saruk Ferahan, - Collezione Adil Besim

West Persia (Iran), c. 329 x 194 cm, late 19th century, the double name “Saruk Ferahan” is made up of the terms for two different carpet qualities and is now used to refer to a third group. Carpets from this group are mostly characterised by finer knotting and a leathery feel than the usual Ferahan specimens. Compared to the Saruks, they are shorn lower and display a courtly design and colour palette. The present piece is manufactured in a rare large format and is in an exceptionally good condition as a result of its coarse, loose knotting. The deep pile shows slight traces of usage only to the outer right in the middle. Both original ends have survived, secured with yarn stitches, replaced side edges.
