An extremely rare Buka Island ceremonial sceptre, 19th century - Tribal Art

wood, lime, 106 cm.

These important ceremonial staffs in the form of a paddle were carried by the highest members or Matesen of the secret Burru society. This staff has a fully rendered Kokorra deity figure with a finely detailed Kapkap in the centre of the staff.
