A very rare spectacular Cameroon felt leopard crown, Bamileke.
Wood/shells/red trade cotton, 38 x 19 x 93.
The leopard as a symbol of strength and speed refers to the king’s ability to transform himself into the animal. When a leopard was killed, it could have been a king in his transformed state, and special rites were performed, including an invocation and a vow of innocence on the part of the hunter who killed the leopard.
Provenance:
Franco Monti, Milan.
