Vase - Tree
clear and green glass, kiln-formed, signed Bořek Šípek, made in 2009, height 210 cm (Zí)

Bořek Šípek emigrated to Germany in 1968 and studied architecture in Hamburg. After his studies, he worked as a designer for famous brands such as Driade and Vitra. After the revolution he founded the Ajeto glassmaking studio in Nový Bor together with the glassmaker Petr Novotný. Here, he created his glass designs. He worked primarily with kiln-formed glass, out of which he fashioned fanciful vases, lamps, bowls or drinkware that is also extremely functional. During Václav Havel’s presidency, he was the court architect of the Prague Castle.
This over two-meter tall vase in the shape of a tree was made for the Prague Crossroads organization. Prague Crossroads is an international spiritual center, which was founded based on an idea that Václav Havel had for the deconsecrated church of St. Anne in Prague’s Old Town. Prague Crossroads is a project of the Dagmar and Václav Havel Foundation Vision 97.
Eight of these monumental vases were made in 2009, and they were placed inside the church, where they served as decorations during ceremonial events.
