Černý Jan (Rychnov 1907 – 1978), Ryba Jiří (Stará Paka 1938)

Reclining Nude
sapphirine glass, fused in a mould, signed and dated prof. J. Černý J. Ryba 70, 24 x 12 c, (Zí)

The work is from the author’s studio.

Jan Černý studied at the AAAD in Prague in the Sculpture Studio (prof. Mařatka) and Glass Studio (prof. Štipl). From 1947, he taught at the Glassmaking Professional Secondary School in Železný Brod. Jan Černý has been focusing on glass-fusing technology since the 1940s. His designs are connected to this technique. In the 1960s he became an artist in the Jablonec Maják collective, where he created a large number of glass reliefs based on his own designs. Here, he began collaborating with his student, Jiří Ryba, with whom he later, in the 1970s, created three-dimensional sculptures, usually in a single piece as a unique work based on their own designs. Together they created around seventy works in this manner. Their joint work, characterized by a sculptor’s approach with a typically expressive stylization, is more well-known abroad than in the Czech Republic. The technology is considered groundbreaking. In the 1990s, a whole generation of glassmakers was inspired by their works.
The Reclining Nude on offer is made of rare sapphirine glass that changes color from opaque light brown to translucent blue depending on the intensity of the light shining through it.
