Johann Springer (1819 - 1875) came from Levoča, Slovakia and from 1840 he worked in Vienna with Matyáš Novotný, the gunman, whose sister he married in 1847. After Novotný died (1856) he acquired his business and was supplying his weapons to the leading members of the Habsburg aristocracy. Initially, he was marking his arms “J. Springer dříve (vormals)Nowotny ve Vídni”. After the death of Springer, the company that still exists in Vienna, commenced marking the arms of Joh. Springer's Erben (= heirs of Johann Springer).
