Johann Matthias Ranftl came from an innkeeper’s family on the outskirts of Vienna, and began studying at the Vienna Academy at the age of roughly 13. One break - and certainly formative experience - was his first trip abroad to Switzerland in 1819, a journey that confirmed his desire to become a painter. After he had successfully completed his studies under Johann Peter Krafft, he was again drawn to distant lands in 1826. He went, this time, to Moscow and
St. Petersburg for two years. The eloquent young man was welcomed at court and received several commissions. Back in Vienna, he specialised more and more in genre pictures, whose protagonists were often children or dogs. He was able to breathe so much life into them that he was given the nickname “Raphael of Dogs”.
