An early and very important Asmat figure, West New Guinea. - Arte Tribale

Wood, pigment, 90 cm high. This figure was given to Dr. Van der Hoeven, when he was treating Framboesia patients in the remotest parts of the Asmat in 1946-47. These ancestral figures were carved by the Wow Ipits, master carvers. A carver's prestige was second only to that of the most successful warriors, since his activities mirrored those of Fumeripits, the mythological founder. Carved images were central to ceremonial life served both to commemorate the dead and to remind that revenge was needed. (VJ)
