![Austria, late 19th century - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature Austria, late 19th century - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature](/fileadmin/lot-images/38Z220420/normal/oesterreich-2-haelfte-19-jahrhundert-8032791.jpg)
Three designs for ceiling vaults, one inscribed “Justitia”, pencil, watercolor on paper, 23 x 37,5 cm, 23 x 37 cm, and 30 x 33 cm, unframed, crease, tears, with tine holes, (BH)
The studies may be related to designs for ceiling vaults in the Vienna Justizpalast (Palace of Justice). It was built in the Neo-Renaissance style after designs by Alexander August Wielemans between 1875 and 1881. Franz and Carl Jobst, Pietro Isella, Ignaz and Franz Schönbrunner, and Max Lenz were responsible for the paintings. These artists were specialized in the decorative designs for the architectural elements and were therefore active in numerous buildings of the Ringstraße. The Justizpalast was stormed in the course of a riot on July 15th, 1927 and set on fire. Between 1928 and 1931 the building was restored by Heinrich Karl Ried in a somewhat modified form.
We are grateful to Dr. Andreas Nierhaus, Vienna Museum, for the scientific support.
