Emilie Mediz-Pelikan was born in 1861 in Vöcklabruck, Upper Austria. She moved to Vienna at an early age and studied with the landscape painter Albert Zimmermann who she followed to Salzburg and later to Munich. She was close friends with the painter Adolf Hölzel who managed the artits’ colony Dachau. In Dachau she got to know the Viennese painter Karl Mediz who she married in 1891. In the beginning the couple lived in Vienna, but moved to Dresden in 1894. Mediz-Pelikan continued to entertain contacts with the artists’ colony in Dachau and made study trips to Paris, Belgium, Hungary and Italy. In 1900 she had early success with her landscape paintings. She exhibited paintings in the art exhibition of Dresden and later participated in exhibitions of the Hagenbund and the Berlin Künstlerhaus. At the age of 47 the artist died of a cardiac paralysis. Her estate remained lost in the German Democratic Republc until the 1980ies. A big exhibition in the Landesmuseum of Upper Austria in 1986 led to a rediscovery and reappraisal of this significant female artist.
