East Caucasus, c. 178 x 127 cm, 19th century. This fine, sürmey blue Caucasian carpet features two rows of stepped diamonds, the standard pattern of Shirvan rugs. Between them are mythical beasts and a cartouche with date (1233). The light-coloured eagle’s beak border impressively surrounds the inner motif. In original condition, with minor traces of use. (VP)
