Male Bust of a Singiti Ancestor Figure
Hemba, Democratic Republic of Congo, wood, 36 cm high. Carved from the sacred 'Iroko', these wooden ancestor figures are called Singiti and are kept in huts to protect them from the elements. Like many ancestral figures, they show legal lineages and give claim to ownership of land authority based on the organisation of clans.

Paul and Maria Wyss, Basel;
