Studied at the Latvian Art Academy in Riga from 1946 to 1948, then at the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow from 1948 to 1949, leading member of the Lianozovo Group. Key organiser of the Bulldozer exhibition in Moscow 1974: non-conformist and politically undesirable. 1978 emigration to France.
