...i contributed to the development of painting that dealt with all these repressed areas. art, painting, that made use of psychoanalytical experiences. colour substance rather than tone became essential, the liquid, the colour paste. in the course of my action painting, colours (substances) and liquids were smeared, splashed, spilled. an ecstatic, dionysian painting emerged, the possibilities of impression and sensation, emerging from repression through excessive experience, were seismographed, and made visible, made conscious through art. consciousness-raising abreaction emerged. my action painting is extreme gestural painting, the physical acting out is essential. The process characterising this type of painting has a dramatic theatrical slant. the event in time is important, the approach to the actions of the o. m. theatre is given. in fact, the practical execution of my o. m. theatre developed from action painting. my action painting is the visual grammar of my action theatre on a (pictorial) surface. the action leaves the (pictorial) surface, moves into physical space, real events are staged. action painting is a basic ritual of o. m. theatre. i used the colour red for 30 years because it is the most intense colour and most extremely illustrates colour fluidity, in which the analogy with blood was obvious. ...
