A Fang chordophone,
Gabon, early 20th cent, 92 cm long, wood. Called an Ogomi by the Fang, these musical instruments came from earlier practices of using a bow-shaped instrument, consisting of a simple flexible hardwood arch that was to be plucked at a single string. The string was held between the teeth of the player and thus resonating in the mouth. The multi string harp is stylized with a large ancestral head. (VJ)
