Rudolf Wacker spent May 1930 in Lucerne at the invitation of the Dunant family. Together they made trips in Switzerland, among others to the medieval town of Gruyères / Greyerz in the canton of Fribourg near Lake Geneva.
Instead of its famous castle, however, Wacker chose a backyard scene, instead of the picturesque the stages of decay. He painted directly on the spot with quick expressive brushstrokes doubtlessly influenced by his mood and inner emotions.
